What I Wore: 80’s Baby

I am a true 80’s baby.  I believe I went through every phase growing up.  First, Cyndi Lauper and Madonna, then Culture Club and Wham, The Cure and Depeche Mode, Run DMC and Slick Rick, and of course Sheila E and Samantha Fox.  I loved it all and still do.  The 80’s fashion I feel gets a bad rap, but it wasn’t a totally unfortunate time in fashion.  We can probably leave stirrup pants and pleated acid wash jeans in the fashion graveyard, but some trends have returned in a glorious way like shoulder pads, leggings, neon, spikes, and studs.

image

This Helmut Lang moto jacket has small shoulder pads and sheer inlay on the sleeves.  I also love that big earrings are back.  I probably won’t break out my old gold bamboo earrings but these sparkly star ones are fun.

image

I also love the 80’s vibe of these electric blue jeans.  Bold pants are going to be everywhere this spring.

Shoe Review: Steve Madden Wedge Sneakers

I just love these sneakers.  I purchased them back in August from Nordstrom.  This was at the start of the wedge sneaker craze and I’m overjoyed the trend has followed into this spring.  They are the epitome of sporty chic and they look good with so many different outfits.  I’ve worn them with jeans, leggings, and even skirts.  The best part is that I can add some height to my 5’2″ frame and still be so comfortable.

Trend Alert: Watercolor Prints

As the weather begins to break, we all will be flocking to the stores to stash our closets with new spring items.  Undoubtedly, we’ll be looking for the usual spring dresses like florals and pastels but I encourage you to try another print this season.  Watercolor prints!  These beautiful and ethereal prints were seen on the runways of designers like Naeem Khan, Monique Lhuillier, and Tadashi Shoji. I love this look because it’s not as literal as floral prints but still very flirty and feminine.  Check out a few of these looks.

What I Wore: Pink & Pearls

The Sun Gods were shining on us this past Sunday so it was a great day for brunch and book club meeting.  We read an amazing novel called “Powder Necklace” by my good college friend Nana Ekua Brew-Hammond. This is her first novel and she has already received rave reviews.  It is a beautiful coming-of-age story about a London-born Ghanaian girl’s journey from England to Ghana and to the United States.  Nana vividly depicts her heroine’s struggles with adolescence and trying to adapt to her ever changing environments.  The book club loved the book as well and if you’re looking for a great book to read, I highly recommend it.

A blazer, jeans, and fun accessories is a uniform I turn to often. It’s a great casual chic look.  The necklace I bought a couple years ago at an Atlanta boutique called Pinkheart.  They have very cute and affordable jewelry and accessories.  You can check it out on their site: www.shoppinkheart.com

What I Wore: Rodan and Fields Launch Party

This past weekend I hosted my launch party for my Rodan and Fields business at my favorite nail salon, Sugarcoat.  It’s a beautiful little salon nestled in the heart of the Buckhead neighborhood of Atlanta.  They offer the latest colors and techniques in nail care and eyelash and eyebrow services are offered as well.  I was so excited to host my first party and had a great turnout from friends and  clients.

I wanted to look professional, but not stuffy so I decided to dust off an old suit of mine.  It was a very cold day, so the wool kept me warm and the plaid pattern kept it playful.  I love paying homage to retro style, especially the 70’s.

Rodan and Fields are the two doctors who created Proactiv.  They now have a new line, simply called Rodan and Fields, that aims to treat the top four reasons people go to the dermatologist: 1) Acne 2) Sun damage and dark spots 3) Skin sensitivity (eczema, rosacea, etc) 4) Anti -aging.  All clients have access to an on-call dermatology nurse for any questions or problems.  People across the nation have seen amazing results and with a 60 day money-back guarantee, there’s nothing to lose.  I started using the Unblemish regimen for my acne and I’ve been happy with the results thus far.  Stay tuned for my skin diary that I will post at the end of my 60 days!

Shoe Review: Poetic Licence Rouge Booties

Today I’m reviewing one of my favorite pairs of booties.  I got these at my friend’s shoe store the Happy Feet Boutique in the Brookhaven neighborhood of Atlanta.  It’s a beautiful shoe store with a variety of shoes from funky Jeffery Campbell platforms to posh Ralph Lauren pumps.  What also sets this store apart from the rest is that they do pedicures there as well.  So, you can sip wine, shop for shoes, and get a pedicure!  Fabulous, right?

Anyway, back to the shoes.  I was initially drawn to the unusual color combo of these shoes.  The dark red and pink are an unexpected but gorgeous combination.

image

Next, I noticed the exquisite details of the braided bow and faux croc pattern on the heel.  As far as comfort goes, I can wear these all day thanks to the nice platform.

image

One bonus detail is the elastic piece inside the heel part of the shoe.  This is excellent for people with a narrow heel, like myself, to help prevent it from slipping.  Genius!

“Scandal”: My Top 20 Olivia Pope Looks

Hands down! My favorite show on television is Scandal!  Shonda Rimes created another hit show with a hot, nail-biting storyline and engaging characters.  But I must admit, what I look forward to the most is seeing what slamming outfits Kerry Washington’s character, Olivia Pope, is going to wear next.  I mean seriously, if I could get into any television character’s closet, it would have to be hers.  She wears some of the best coats I have ever seen, the suits are the essence of sophistication, and the dresses are beyond….

My cousin actually gave me the idea for this post from one of her Facebook posts that linked to an article on vulture.com.  In their article, they showed every outfit Olivia Pope has worn since the start of the show.  I decided to edit that down to my top 20 favorite looks.

The Coats

Every woman needs a classic trench coat in her closet and this white one is a stunner.  It’s so crisp yet it’s not too white so it can easily transition between seasons.  The two coats with the wide collars are just so soft and chic.  The two structured coats are beyond sophisticated.  I really love the last one!

The Suit Jackets

image   image

image   image

image   image

There is something so elegant about a structured suit jacket with a high neckline as displayed in the first two looks.  The second two jackets are similar to my style.  I have narrow hips, so jackets that have an embellished bottom or peplum tend to flatter me better.  Plus, they are girly and feminine which I love. The last two looks both have cool, asymmetrical necklines. I wish I could find a white jacket like the one here.  Usually, white jackets can appear a little sterile, but the asymmetrical neckline and dark buttons gives it a nice edge.

Flattering Necklines

Nothing shows off a woman’s decolletage better than a draping neckline.  It’s just suggestive enough without being too sexy.  The second two dresses have a beautiful high neckline, but the V-neck makes it less severe and little more feminine.  The last blouse is so delicate and ladylike.  Another piece I would love to add to my closet.

All Dressed Up

As you know, black and white is going to be having a serious moment this Spring and the first two dresses are a good example of how to do it well.  The accents on the waist make hers look microscopic!  I’m loving the gray boucle jacket with the long gloves.  I mean seriously, it doesn’t get more chic than that.  The last look is just O-M-G!  I have no words….

I hope you enjoyed the journey through the amazing wardrobe of Olivia Pope.  I look forward to seeing how the convoluted storyline unfolds this season, and of course, the fashion!  What are your favorite Olivia Pope looks?  Feel free to share below.

What I Wore: How to Winterize a Spring Outfit

Sunday I attended a lovely ladies brunch for one of my girlfriend’s birthday.  She requested that we wear bright, springy dresses to the brunch but unfortunately, it decided to wait until March to get cold in Atlanta.  It was a windy 34 degrees, not exactly dress weather.  I wanted to keep the birthday girl’s wishes so I winterized my look with opaque tights and a leather jacket.

We had brunch at this incognito spot in Midtown Atlanta.  The food was great and the service was excellent.  There were some fabulous women at the brunch and so much interesting conversation from a diverse bunch of ladies.  There was also some great networking going on.
