What’s better than and ‘it’ girl or a jumpsuit? An ‘it’ girl in a jumpsuit! Lupita Nyong’o has been burning up the red carpet since she hit the scene and each look gets better and better. My ultimate favorite alternative for a dress for an elegant occasion is a jumpsuit. This sleek black, strapless Veronica Beard jumpsuit Lupita is sporting here is super flirty yet sophisticated. Of course, this girl knows how to accessorize and she added some fun touches with printed pumps and a pop of color clutch. I found a similar sweetheart neckline, strapless jumpsuit for only $80 and have provided a way to style it like Lupita.
A new ‘it’ girl has captured Hollywood’s heart and mine as well! Lupita Nyong’o!! The 31 year old Kenyan actress has swept the film industry off their feet winning an Oscar and a SAG award for her break out role as Patsey in 12 Years a Slave. She had not even yet graduated form the Yale School of Drama when she was cast for the role! Ms. Nyong’o has also taken the fashion world by storm by killing it on the red carpet this entire award season. Even though she is a newbie to the red carpet, her keen sense of style has caught the eye of just about every major designer wanting her to wear their designs. She has topped the best dressed lists all season that many Hollywood veterans have yet to achieve.
This timeless Prada gown that Lupita helped design proved to be an historical moment as she took home the Oscar for best actress in a supporting role.
This is when I personally first noticed Lupita on the red carpet. I believe she single-handedly made cape dresses a fashion must when she arrived to the Golden Globes in this Ralph Lauren stunner.
Gorgeous in emerald green Dior at the BAFTA awards.
Lupita was absolutely glowing in this yellow J. Mendel gown at the Hollywood Film Awards.
The fashionista is unforgettable in this daring turquoise Gucci gown at the SAG awards.
It’s always nice to see a fresh face on the red carpet, but it’s even more special when it’s a face that represents a beauty that is not typically celebrated in our society. As Lupita addressed in her speech at the Essence Black Women in Hollywood luncheon, it is extremely important for young girls to see people who look like them who are considered beautiful. It has a huge impact on the self esteem of young girls when they don’t see women who look like them being celebrated in the media. Lupita spoke of how she prayed for lighter skin until she saw model, Alek Wek, on the cover of magazine. It wasn’t until then that she realized that how she looked was enough to feel beautiful. I hope that the idea of beauty in our media will continue to evolve, but until then, I’m grateful we have been blessed with the beauty, grace, and eloquence of Lupita Nyong’o.
