MBFW 2014: My Favorite Runway Trends

Alas, another MBFW is over but it left behind a brilliant outlook on what’s to come in the fall.  There are a few trends that really jumped out and made me excited for the next fall season.  I’m happy to see that capes were still on the runways.  There is something so mysterious and sophisticated about a cape that I just love.

Lupita Nyong’o was stunning in a jaw-dropping Ralph Lauren cape gown at the Golden Globes and it appears other designers are following suit with their own designs.

One of my favorite movies of all times is Clueless and that’s exactly what I thought of as I watched the Tory Burch show.  She brought back thigh and knee high socks with chunky heeled shoes. Classic!

It appeared many designers may be fans of Scandal as there were quite a few wrap coats on the runways indicative of Olivia Pope’s flawless style.

It was refreshing to see pretty pastel palettes as opposed to the typical warm colors.  For some reason, I feel that clothes in heavy textures like wool and tweed look so much cooler in light colors.  Unexpected and chic.

Black and white is a look that never goes out of style.  It’s fun to see how designers continue to re-invent this look time after time.

Just as radiant orchid is the pantone of this spring, azure blue is the star of fall.  This deeply rich blue hue will make anyone feel like royalty.

MBFW S/S 2014 Designers to Know: Emerson by Jackie Fraser-Swan

I’m featuring Emerson by Jackie Fraser-Swan for my last installation of MBFW designers to know.  I must admit I was not familiar with this label until I watched the show and was totally smitten.  Jackie attended the School of Fashion Design of Boston before creating her own line.  I’m not sure how she would describe her style but I view it as rocker school girl chic.  I don’t know if that makes any sense but it’s definitely a cool line that I love.

Emerson

I’m head-over-heels in love with this rich purple fabric and the leather accents are so fierce.  The styling is perfectly offset with the boyish oxford shoes.

Emerson

This is the rocker school girl look I’m talking about.

Emerson

The asymmetric hemline on this skirt is sexy but the masculine jacket and shoes bring balance to the look.

Emerson

All buttoned up but still edgy.

MBFW S/S 2014 Designers to Know: Noon by Noor

Today I’m featuring the amazing pair of ladies behind the label Noon by Noor.  Shaikha Noor Al Khalifa and Shaikha Haya Al Khalifa are cousins that both earned degrees in Fashion Design from Marymount University.  Influenced by their homeland of Bahrain, their designs are laden with rich textiles and delicate embellishments that exude luxury and femininity.  I really appreciate how they put a modern twist to otherwise traditional silhouettes from their Middle Eastern background.  They debuted their first showing at MBFW S/S 2013 in September 2012 with rave reviews.  Their designs have been worn by celebs such as Kim Kardashian, Demi Lovato, and Blake Lively.

Noon by Noor

I’m such a sucker for a jumpsuit and this print is so crazy beautiful and intricate.

Noon by Noor

The flowing peasant blouse and oxblood leather midi skirt is a killer combo!  The embellishment on the blouse brings an extra touch of femininity to the look.

Noon by Noor

Mixing the same print in a different color is a smart way to mix prints without it appearing too busy.  This look is giving me a 60’s vibe which I love.

Noon by Noor

More gorgeous leather oxblood, this time in a flirty pair of shorts balanced with a lady-like cream coat.

I could actually see this as a beautiful, simple wedding dress.

MBFW S/S 2014 Designers to Know: Desigual

Welcome to my second installation of MBFW Designers to Know.  Desigual  is a long time favorite label of mine but is not very well known to the masses in the U.S.  I was so delighted to find that Collage, a local boutique, actually carried this colorful brand.  I had the pleasure of shopping at Desigual during my visit to Barcelona and brought back this beauty.

Desigual

The managing director of this Spanish label, Manuel Jadraque, had been with company since 2004 and was instrumental in bringing the label to the States.  This line always stays true to it’s playful and colorful soul while staying sophisticated.  The silk pants suit below is one of my favorite looks.  It’s effortless but still such a sexy statement.  The black and white graphic coat is just so mod and adorable.  I really appreciate how their clothes maintain an element of fun whether it’s in their bold colors or crazy graphics.  Either way it puts a smile on my face :-)

MBFW S/S 14 Designers to Know: Ruffian

It’s an exciting time of year! MBFW S/S 14 has commenced and it looks as good as ever.  Instead of writing about designers that are household names, I’ve decided to focus on designers that are not as well known, but should be.  There is a myriad of talent out there and I love discovering amazing designers and bringing them to the attention of my readers.  Today I’m featuring Ruffian.  Brian Wolk and Claude Morais are the pair behind this critically acclaimed New York label. The designers received the Fashion Group International Rising Star Award.  Brian Wolk has a background in costume and fashion design, whereas Claude Morais is a model turned stylist turned fashion designer.  Together this dynamic duo have created a line that is cool, funky, urban, and yet a little playful.

What really caught my attention to their S/S 14 collection was the fabric.  They made a bold choice in creating suits and pants with a bright, shiny material.  It could have turned out really wrong, but it looks oh, so right.  I also love the quirkiness of the style with boyish twists like the faux-tie look on the black shift dress.  I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

NYFW Fall ’13: What I’m Digging (Part 2)

Well, another mind-blowing NYFW has come to an end……boo! But here’s your chance to review some of the highlights (at least from my perspective) from the past week.

imageimageimage

imageimageimage

Ana Sui

I was blown away by this collection.  The colors were so electrifying they almost jumped of the runway.  I also admire how Ana Sui always stays true to her hippie-cool aesthetic and does it so well.  The models looked like they were having a blast which made me ask myself “would I be having that much fun if I was wearing those clothes?”  Guess I’ll have to buy some to find out :-)

imageimageimage

Marc Jacobs

Marc Jacobs is always a fan favorite and it’s clear to see why. Besides the fact that his clothes were amazing (as always), the models looked like they were just too cool for school, which I loved! Trends that I observed were pants over dresses, boxy handbags, and those shoes need to get on my feet like right now!

imageimageimage

Carolina Herrera

Carolina Herrera is probably the most elegant designer of our time which was exhibited in this Fall collection.  Her looks were sleek and modern.  I loved the luxurious fur cape and that sequined hooded gown was to die for!

imageimageimage

imageimageimage

Rachel Zoe

It’s seems to be common for a stylist to receive a lot of skepticism from the fashion industry when they attempt to launch a fashion line, but I don’t think anyone could criticize what Rachel Zoe has been producing.  I don’t care what anyone says, her line is solid! Her style is always so current yet she’s able to maintain her flair for vintage.  Can we just talk about those baggy leather pants? Oh!  And the last look I featured with the turtleneck collar and fingerless gloves….I die!

imageimageimage

imageimageimage

Adeam

This designer is new to me but I am totally feeling her vibe.  Hanako Maeda is a young Japanese designer who I feel is taking the fashion industry to the next level.  Her clothes are a little dark and erie, yet so effortless and cool without the pretense you feel from some other designers.  When looking at her clothes, I really feel like they are truly an expression of her which makes me think she’s a really interesting person.  I look forward to seeing what interesting creations the future will bring for this young designer.

J. Crew

My frustration with J. Crew is that their runway shows are always so impressive but I never see that cute stuff in the stores!!!  Let’s hope this time is different because there a couple of pieces that need to be in my closet.  #1 is that fuschia tweed blazer. #2 are those pointy toe pumps.  #3 would be the crop pants (both the tweed and the plaid).  #4 the floral skirt.  We’ll see what happens.

imageimageimage

imageimageimage

Tory Burch

Last but certainly not least! Anyone who knows me knows I don’t leave the house without at least one Tory Burch item on.  Needless to say, she is probably my favorite designer.  I’m really hoping I can pull off the skirt length that she displayed in this collection.  The just below the knee length is so chic but alas, I’m only 5’2″ so I’ll need my big girl shoes for that.  Another trend I’m liking is the dark, opaque tights even with pastel dresses.  The coat fabrics were so lush and timeless and would definitely be a great investment piece for any wardrobe. I would also like to add to my closet that burgundy purse, the velvet minaudiere with the tassel, and the statement necklaces!  Oh, Tory! If you keep this up, I’m going to need a second, third, and fourth job!

Well, I hoped you enjoyed my perspective of NYFW ’13.  Again, all photos were from newyork.mbfashionweek.com.  Look for my next coverage of NYFW in September.  Hopefully, I’ll be writing from inside the tents!

NYFW Fall ’13: What I’m Digging (Part 1)

So, I’m happy to have escaped NYC just before Nemo hit, but I’m a sad I missed being at the shows.  I’ve been obsessively watching all of the runway shows on-line and I just wanted to share with you guys what I’m digging so far.

imageimageimage

BCBG Max Azria

This collection really mastered the art of layering without coming off too grungy.  The creamy colors and the dark colors in lighter fabrics kept the looks feminine yet strong.

imageimageimage

imageimageimage

Rebecca Minkoff

I don’t even know where to begin! I was so in love with this entire collection! It was so hard to just choose a few looks to feature because I wanted to jump into everything that came down that runway.  Her collection totally embodied effortless cool.  She dresses the type of woman that every woman wants to be…..including me.

imageimageimage

imageimageimage

Mara Hoffman

Aside from the beautiful design of all her clothing, what drew me to this collection was her color choices.  They were just so vibrant and unexpected for a Fall collection, but I really appreciated the divergence from typical Fall clothing.  I loved the interesting geometric prints on her knits, and no one does a whimsical maxi dress like Mara Hoffman.  Stunning!

imageimageimage

imageimageimage

Tracy Reese

I’m going to have to give this collection the “Best Mix of Prints” award.  How she was able to mix florals, animal print, and neon colors, and make it look cool is beyond me.  But this totally works! I’m going to use the collection as a guide to mixing prints in my own closet.  I’ll post some outfits later, but please don’t judge ;-)

imageimageimage

imageimageimage

Diane Von Furstenberg

DVF collection is such a classic brand and Diane is truly iconic.  This collection was everything I expected from DVF.  Classic, chic, and subtly sexy.  I am a fanatic for those jumpsuits!!  They are just so sexy and fun with a touch of 70’s throwback that I just can’t get enough of.

imageimageimage

imageimageimage

Zac Posen

Zac Posen really knows how to dress a lady…..not a woman, but a lady.  This collection just oozes sophistication.  The silhouette and skirt lengths definitely gave the collection a vintage feel, circa 1940’s.  I also appreciated the juxtaposition of menswear inspiration from the tweed with the ultra feminine silhouette of his designs.  The gloves and fur collar just really put an exclamation point on the elegance of the whole collection.  Love, love, love!!!!

Hope you enjoyed what I’ve shared so far.  All photos were from newyork.mbfashionweek.com.  Stay tuned for Part 2 later this week.  Have you been following NFW? What were your favorite looks?
